Considerations

There are many reasons you may want to start martial arts training. Martial arts training is known to build confidence, improve your health with body conditioning, and it can also strengthen self-defence skills.

Whichever motivation is prompting you to look into martial arts, a trainer is a top choice to get you started. It's easier to make a habit of regular practice when you work with a trainer. They’ll show you the proper movements which can prevent you from injuring yourself.

It's most important to find someone you're comfortable working with. If you enjoy working with your martial arts trainer, you'll enjoy the practice and train better.

Before you start your lessons you may also want to consider updating your meal plan to! During your martial arts training you'll be using up energy similar to a workout. Make sure your diet will keep you energised all the way through the lessons with the expertise of a nutritionist.

Location

You will also have to consider where you will train and how this can affect cost. Do you have space in your home for martial arts practise? If you have a home gym or an empty room this could work perfectly. Some trainers will provide lessons right in your home, so if this is something you are interested be sure to ask.

However, if you don’t have a home gym or would rather go to a studio for your class this won’t be a problem either. Keep in mind that if you are taking lessons at a gym or studio this will reflect in the rate. Your martial arts trainer will need to cover the cost of rental space to teach you at a gym or studio. Still, this cost is usually balanced out in group lessons.

Martial Arts Disciplines

There are many different styles of martial arts. No matter what you're looking for, you should be able to find a style that fits you. To help you choose the best discipline for your lifestyle we’ve outlined some of the most popular types below.

Karate

Karate is a form of fighting that originated in Japan. It combines both offensive and defensive moves but avoids grappling and wrestling. In karate lessons, you'll learn how to make strong strikes with nearly every part of your body.

Mixed Martial Arts

Mixed martial arts, or MMA, is a full-contact sport that combines techniques from other martial arts disciplines with combat fighting.

Kickboxing or Muay Thai

Kickboxing or Muay Thai is a martial art form from Thailand that uses powerful strikes from your hands, shins, feet, knees, and elbows.

Taekwondo

Taekwondo originated in Korea and hones kicking and punching techniques.

Kung Fu

Kung fu refers to a wide variety of martial arts styles from China. This practice also combines offence and defence with punching, kicking, grappling, and blocking moves taught during lessons.

Jiu-Jitsu

Jiu-Jitsu (or jujitsu) is another Japanese martial art. Consisting of kicks, punches, holds, and strikes, jujitsu puts an emphasis on flexibility and speed.

Judo

Similar to many of the other style, Judo also originated in Japan. It focuses on defensive moves and grappling with an opponent. You may also learn how to disarm attackers using pressure points.

If you aren’t sure which style would best suit you, simply make note of this in the request form. Then based on your goals your martial arts trainer can provide you with advice.

Group vs. One To One Lessons

When it comes to martial arts classes there are several different styles offered such as one to one lessons, small and large groups. To help you decide on the best class size for you we’ve included the benefits and drawbacks of each below.

One To One Lessons

One to one lessons offer the opportunity to work closely with your instructor. This may be helpful if you are somewhat experienced in your practice and know what areas you'd like to work on. It can also help if you are just starting out and would like to learn in a small environment.

However, you will miss out on the opportunity to learn from others at your level. Some martial arts disciplines can be done solo, but others require you to work with another person. For these, you may want to look at small group lessons instead.

Keep in mind that private or one to one lessons do tend to cost more than group lessons. So if you are looking for a more cost-effective option then, small or group lessons may be a better fit.

Small Group Lessons

Small group lessons can blend the personalised attention from the trainer with the benefit of learning from others. It's a great compromise if you don’t need one to one focus from your instructor but aren't interested in a larger session.

Large Group Lessons

Large lessons usually have more than 10 people working in the same space. This can be helpful as there are many different types of people to spar with.

You may even learn more being faced with different personalities and approaches to martial arts. However for some this benefit can also be a drawback. There are more people demanding the trainer's time and energy so you won’t get as much one to one time with your instructor.

Larger lessons also come with the added benefit of being the most cost-effective. As the cost of the session is split over a larger group of people rates are sometimes lower.

Frequency of Lessons

While the frequency of your lessons is ultimately your decision, your trainer may make suggestions based on your goals. You can take lessons daily, several times a week, or once a week. The more frequently you take lessons, the sooner you'll see an improvement in the condition of your body and mind.

Even if you decide your schedule only has room for lessons once a week, you should be prepared for home practice as well. Again, your trainer will recommend a certain number of hours for you after a discussion of your goals and timeline. They may also suggest other exercises for your routine to improve your abilities.

Remember that training too much can cause injury. Be sure to listen to your body as you get into the habit of regular martial arts training and dial back your lessons as needed.
You might be surprised by how much you can take! If you start with a more conservative plan, you could increase the frequency later. Speak with your trainer if you need to adjust your routine. It's important to find a balance with a regular schedule.

Depending on how frequently you take your lessons you may also be able to cut costs. Some trainers offer discounts to individuals who purchase multiple lessons at once, instead of showing up on a drop-in basis.

Summary

Martial arts training can be great for both your body and mind. Giving you more confidence, you will improve your wellness and self-defence skills. With flexible lesson schedules, you can fit your chosen discipline into your life easily.
